AgNPs Antibacterial Eucalyptus Pellita Propionibacterium Acnes Wound Pathogenic Bacteria

Abstract

Background: Acne and wound infections are health issues frequently caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Rising antibiotic resistance is driving the development of alternative antibacterial agents.

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in gel preparations synthesized using Eucalyptus pellita leaf extract against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes and wound pathogenic bacteria.

Method: This was an experimental laboratory study using a post-test-only control group design. Antibacterial activity was tested using the well-diffusion method. The results showed that the AgNP gel inhibited the growth of all tested bacteria. The largest inhibition zone diameter was observed against Propionibacterium acnes, measuring 26.67 ± 2.309 mm.

Results: The two-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference between bacterial types and treatment groups (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in gel formulations exhibit antibacterial activity and have the potential to be developed as alternative antibacterial agents.
