Communication Hierarchy Interprofessional Collaboration Interprofessional Education Patient Safety

Abstract

Background: Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) plays a crucial role in improving the quality of healthcare services and patient safety. However, hierarchical culture and ineffective communication remain significant barriers to its implementation.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the influence of hierarchical culture on communication effectiveness within IPC and to examine the role of Interprofessional Education (IPE) in enhancing collaboration among healthcare teams.

Method: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach by searching articles from Google Scholar, Scispace, and national journals published between 2020 and 2026. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 10 articles were included in the analysis.

Results: The findings revealed that communication is a key determinant of successful IPC implementation, while hierarchical culture acts as a barrier by creating professional dominance and limiting team members’ participation. Communication effectiveness is influenced by individual, team, organizational, and healthcare system factors. Furthermore, IPE has been shown to improve role understanding, communication skills, and interprofessional teamwork.

Conclusion: Hierarchical culture significantly influences communication effectiveness in IPC. Strengthening IPE and fostering a collaborative culture are essential to improve healthcare quality and patient safety.
