Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that requires continuous self-management through healthy dietary practices, regular physical activity, medication adherence, and blood glucose monitoring. Adequate knowledge is an important foundation for enabling patients to understand and apply appropriate disease-management practices. Health education using video media may provide an accessible approach to delivering information through visual and auditory components.
Purpose: To determine the effect of video-based health education on knowledge of healthy lifestyle behaviours among patients with diabetes mellitus.
Method: This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study included 98 patients with diabetes mellitus selected using purposive sampling. Knowledge was measured before the intervention (pretest), followed by health education delivered through video media and a posttest measurement. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test.
Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 1.96 ± 0.731 before the intervention to 2.93 ± 0.259 after video-based health education, with a mean difference of 0.97 points. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test demonstrated a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest knowledge scores (Z = -7.495, p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Video-based health education was associated with a significant improvement in knowledge regarding healthy lifestyle behaviours among patients with diabetes mellitus. Video media may be considered an accessible educational approach for supporting diabetes-related health knowledge in primary healthcare settings.
