Antibiotics Antibiotic Resistance Public Knowledge

Abstract

Background: Inappropriate antibiotic use remains a public health problem because it can increase the risk of antibiotic resistance. Poor public understanding of the indications, usage guidelines, and impacts of antibiotics can lead to irrational drug use.

Purpose: To evaluate the level of public knowledge about the use of antibiotics.

Method: This study employed a descriptive survey design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted from May to June 2025 in Pampang Village, Panakkukang District, Makassar City. A sample of 100 respondents was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire and then analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution and percentages.

Results: The results of the study showed that the level of public knowledge regarding antibiotic use was in the poor category (58%), good category (34%), and sufficient category (8%). Most respondents were female (54%), aged 26–35 years (25%), had a high school/vocational high school education (42%), and most were housewives (24%). Most respondents understood that antibiotics are used for bacterial infections (76%), must be obtained with a doctor's prescription (67%), and improper use can lead to resistance (59%).

Conclusion: The level of public knowledge about the use of antibiotics is still relatively low, so it is necessary to increase education about the proper use of antibiotics to prevent misuse and antibiotic resistance.
