Burn Injuries Mount Merapi Eruption Skills Video-Based Education
Abstract
Background: The eruption of Mount Merapi is a natural disaster that has the potential to cause casualties with burn injuries resulting from exposure to heat, volcanic ash, and other volcanic materials. Proper initial burn management is essential to prevent complications and reduce the severity of injuries. One effort to prevent such outcomes is through improving people's skills in basic burn care.
Purpose: To determine the effect of video-based education on basic burn care skills in preparation for the risk of a Mount Merapi eruption.
Method: This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design with a cross-sectional method. The population consisted of 30 respondents. The sampling technique employed total sampling, involving 30 participants who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using educational videos and observation sheets. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon statistical test.
Results: Prior to the educational intervention, all respondents (30 respondents; 100%) were categorized as having poor burn care skills. After receiving the video-based education, all respondents (30 respondents; 100%) were categorized as skilled. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000, indicating that p < 0.05, which means that video-based education had a statistically significant effect on respondents' basic burn care skills.
Conclusion: Video-based education has a significant effect on improving basic burn care skills in preparation for the risk of a Mount Merapi eruption.
