Islamic Values Medical Education Medical Students Professionalism Review Systematic Literature

Abstract

Background: Professionalism is a core competency in medical education, encompassing integrity, empathy, accountability, effective communication, and altruism. However, the development of professional attitudes among medical students faces various challenges in contemporary medical education. Integrating Islamic values into the medical curriculum has been proposed as an approach to strengthen students’ moral, ethical, and spiritual competencies alongside their academic and clinical training.

Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of integrating Islamic values into medical education in fostering professionalism among medical students based on evidence from published scientific literature.

Method: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Literature was systematically searched in Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2021 and 2026. After the screening and eligibility process, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a narrative thematic synthesis approach.

Results: The findings indicate that the integration of Islamic values—including amanah (trustworthiness), ṣidq (honesty), iḥsān (excellence), raḥmah (compassion), ‘adl (justice), and ikhlas (sincerity)—positively contributes to the development of medical professionalism. These values were implemented through formal curriculum integration, the hidden curriculum, spiritual development programs, and faculty role modeling. Amanah strengthened professional responsibility, ṣidq enhanced integrity, while raḥmah improved empathy and therapeutic communication. Supporting factors included an Islamic academic environment, a well-structured curriculum, and exemplary faculty members. Conversely, barriers included the predominance of the biomedical model, limited educators with integrative competencies, and insufficient evaluation of students’ moral and spiritual development.

Conclusion: The integration of Islamic values into medical education is effective in fostering professionalism among medical students by strengthening integrity, empathy, accountability, effective communication, and professional identity. A curriculum that systematically integrates scientific knowledge with ethical and spiritual values has the potential to produce physicians who are professionally competent, compassionate, and guided by Islamic moral principles.
