Blood Pressure Preoperative Pulse Rate Sleep Quality
Abstract
Background: Sleep quality on the night before surgery is an important factor influencing patients’ physiological conditions, particularly blood pressure and pulse rate. Sleep disturbances among preoperative patients commonly occur due to anxiety, stress, and the hospital environment, which may reduce melatonin secretion and increase sympathetic nervous system activity. These changes can lead to elevated blood pressure and pulse rate and increase the risk of hemodynamic instability.
Purpose: To determine the correlation between sleep quality on the night before surgery and blood pressure and pulse rate among preoperative patients.
Method: This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design and a cross-sectional method. The sample consisted of 54 preoperative patients selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a modified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and observation sheets for blood pressure and pulse rate measurements. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank test.
Results: Statistical analysis using the Spearman Rank test revealed a significant relationship between sleep quality on the night before surgery and blood pressure among preoperative patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Hospital, with a p-value of 0.002 (p < 0.05). Furthermore, analysis of the pulse rate variable showed a p-value of 0.008 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between sleep quality on the night before surgery and pulse rate among preoperative patients.
Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between sleep quality on the night before surgery and both blood pressure and pulse rate among preoperative patients. The strength of the correlation was moderate for blood pressure and weak for pulse rate, with a positive correlation direction.
