Health Literacy Hypertention Menopause

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases worldwide, including in Indonesia, and its risk increases among postmenopausal women due to declining estrogen levels that reduce cardiovascular protection. Effective hypertension control is influenced by health behaviors, while health literacy plays an important role in enabling individuals to understand health information and adopt appropriate hypertension control behaviors.

Purpose: To analyze the relationship between health literacy and hypertension control behavior among postmenopausal women with hypertension.

Method: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional correlational design was conducted among 71 postmenopausal women with hypertension selected using purposive sampling. Health literacy was measured using the Health Literacy Instrument for Adults (HELIA), while hypertension control behavior was assessed using a validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test.

Results: A statistically significant positive correlation was found between health literacy and hypertension control behavior (p < 0.001, r = 0.711), indicating a strong positive relationship.

Conclusion: Health literacy is significantly associated with hypertension control behavior among postmenopausal women with hypertension.
