Contact Duration Housewives Hand Washing With Soap Irritant Contact Dermatitis Irritant Substances

Abstract

Background: Irritant Contact Dermatitis (ICD) is a skin disorder caused by repeated exposure to irritant substances such as detergents, dishwashing liquid, bleach, and other household cleaning agents. Housewives are vulnerable to developing ICD because daily domestic activities involve frequent and prolonged contact with these substances.

Purpose: To determine the factors associated with symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis among housewives.

Method: This study employed a quantitative analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 96 respondents were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the chi-square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05).

Results: Of the 96 respondents, 60 (62.5%) were categorized as being at risk for irritant contact dermatitis symptoms. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between hand washing with soap (CTPS) (p=0.003), duration of contact (p=0.004), and type of irritant substances (p=0.000) with symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis. Meanwhile, knowledge (p=0.112) and clean water sources (p=0.398) were not significantly associated with irritant contact dermatitis symptoms. The strongest associated factor was the type of irritant substances with PR=1.823 (95% CI: 1.308–2.541), followed by duration of contact with PR=1.630 (95% CI: 1.177–2.259).

Conclusion: Hand washing behavior with soap, duration of contact, and type of irritant substances were significantly associated with symptoms of irritant contact dermatitis among housewives.
