Blood Sugar Levels Diabetes Mellitus Diabetic Ulcers Wound Healing
Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that often leads to complications, one of which is diabetic ulcers. These wounds occur as a result of neuropathy, vascular disorders, and infection, causing the healing process to tend to be prolonged.
Purpose To analyze the relationship between blood glucose levels and wound healing time in diabetic ulcer patients, identify the picture of patient blood glucose levels, determine the distribution of wound healing time, and determine the strength of the relationship between blood glucose levels and the wound healing process in diabetes mellitus patients with diabetic ulcers.
Method: This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 54 patients selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained from observation sheets, blood glucose tests, and records of wound healing duration. Analyses were performed using univariate and bivariate methods with the Chi-Square test at a significance level of p<0.05.
Results: The majority of respondents were aged 56–65 years (38.9%), female (57.4%), had lived with diabetes for 5–10 years (44.4%), had a high school education (35.2%), and were homemakers (33.3%). A total of 68.5% of respondents had uncontrolled blood sugar, while 40.7% experienced wound healing taking more than 8 weeks. Statistical analysis showed a p-value of 0.003 with a contingency coefficient of 0.462, indicating a significant association of moderate strength. Discussion: Hyperglycemia disrupts microcirculation, oxygen supply, collagen formation, and leukocyte function, thereby slowing wound healing.
Conclusion: The more uncontrolled blood sugar levels are, the longer wound healing takes. Optimal glycemic control is essential to prevent complications.
