Child Community Health Center Medication Non-Specific Diarrhea Prescription
Abstract
Background: Diarrhea is a condition characterized by more frequent bowel movements than usual, more than three times a day, and loose or watery stools. Non-specific diarrhea is a type of diarrhea caused by dietary factors or the body's inability to digest lactose.
Purpose: To determine drug prescribing patterns and the most frequently prescribed medications for non-specific diarrhea in pediatric patients.
Method: This is a qualitative study with a descriptive design and retrospective data collection in 2024.
Results: The most common drug prescribing pattern was a combination of supplements and electrolyte fluids, accounting for 77 prescriptions (36%). The prescribing pattern also showed a combination of supplements, electrolyte fluids, and analgesics/antipyretics in 44 prescriptions (21%), indicating that patients frequently experienced accompanying symptoms such as fever or pain. Other prescribing patterns, such as a combination of supplements, electrolyte fluids, and antidiarrheals (27 prescriptions, 13%), and a combination of supplements, analgesics/antipyretics, electrolyte fluids, and antiemetics (6 prescriptions, 3%), indicate that nonspecific diarrhea is often complex and requires comprehensive treatment to address the various coexisting symptoms.
Conclusion: Of the 212 prescriptions for nonspecific diarrhea analyzed, the majority used a combination of supplements and electrolyte fluids, accounting for 77 prescriptions (36%). Other prescribing patterns identified included a combination of supplements, electrolytes, and analgesics/antipyretics (21%), and a combination of supplements, electrolytes, and antidiarrheals (13%). This predominant use of supplements and electrolytes confirms that the primary priority in nonspecific diarrhea therapy is restoring fluid balance and preventing dehydration.
