Child Health Environmental Toxicology Household Pesticide Exposure Neurodevelopment
Abstract
Background: Household pesticide exposure is an emerging environmental health concern that may affect child neurodevelopment. Continuous low-dose exposure from indoor air, surfaces, and dust presents unique risks compared with agricultural settings
Purpose: This systematic review aims to synthesize studies published from 2020-2025 that examine the relationship between household pesticide exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children.
Method: A literature search was conducted using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases for articles published in 2020-2025 using keywords related to household pesticide exposure, child neurodevelopment, pregnancy, and environmental health. Articles were selected through identification, deletion of duplicates, screening of titles and abstracts, and assessment of full-text eligibility.
Results: Twelve eligible studies were identified from major databases, covering prenatal and postnatal exposure pathways as well as potential biological mechanisms. Findings consistently show that exposure to organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids is associated with impaired cognition, behavioral problems, reduced motor skills, and poorer socio-emotional development. Suggested mechanisms include cholinergic disruption, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and epigenetic changes. Variability across studies was mainly due to differences in exposure measurement and neurodevelopment assessment tools.
Conclusion: Household pesticide exposure is consistently linked with negative neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. Improved household pesticide control, increased public awareness, and further longitudinal research are needed to strengthen evidence and support preventive strategies.
Keywords: Child Health; Environmental Toxicology; Household Pesticide Exposure; Neurodevelopment.
