Achilles Tendon Rupture Badminton Program Rehabilitasi Tendon Achilles

Abstract

Background: The demand for sports has increased in recent years, including badminton, a sport enjoyed by all ages. The high intensity of this sport is often not matched by adequate physical ability, resulting in the potential for injury. One common injury is Achilles tendon rupture (ATR). Surgery is one of the most frequently chosen treatments given the significantly better postoperative outcomes compared to non-operative options. Of course, surgery is not a stand-alone procedure; controlled and targeted rehabilitation is necessary. Providing exercise and physiotherapy modalities can help reduce post-operative complaints such as pain, range of motion (ROM), muscle weakness, atrophy and decreased cardiovascular endurance.

Purpose: Further research is needed, particularly in the case studies or clinical studies, to evaluate the effectiveness of comprehensive physiotherapy management in patients who have undergone achilles tendon repair. This findings can provide a basis for designing better, more applicable, and evidence-based rehabilitation protocols.

Methods: This study used a case report design with a pre and post evaluation approach. The subject or sample was a 35 year old male badminton player (non-professional athlete) diagnosed with Achilles Tendon Rupture (ATR) and underwent post-repair surgery.

Results: After a 5-month rehabilitation program, there was a significant decrease in pain (NRS) and swelling (anthropometry), as well as an increase in ROM, muscle strength, muscle mass, and cardiovascular endurance.

Conclusion: Physical rehabilitation program for patients with post-repair Achilles Tendon Rupture (ATR) is individually designed and phased and has been shown to have positive effects in reducing pain, edema, ROM, muscle strength, muscle mass, and cardiovascular endurance. A rehabilitation approach that combines pain management, joint function restoration, muscle strengthening, and cardiovascular endurance can enable full functional recovery and support patient readiness to return to sport.
