Cataract Extraction Endophthalmitis Eye Infections Patient Postoperative Care

Abstract

Background: Post-cataract surgery infections, particularly endophthalmitis, are rare but potentially vision-threatening complications. Postoperative care and patient education are essential for infection prevention and early detection. However, evidence on infection postoperative care remains fragmented across different aspects.

Purpose: To summarize research findings on post-cataract surgery infections, care strategies, and factors affecting post-cataract surgery patients.

Method: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR using the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework. The population included patients undergoing cataract surgery or having undergone cataract surgery, the concept focused on Postoperative infection, Infection prevention, Postoperative self-care, Education, Medication adherence, Follow-up, and Endophthalmitis and the context included Home-care, Hospital discharge, Outpatient, and Community settings. A literature search was conducted using MeSH terms in PubMed, keywords in ScienceDirect, and other relevant sources. Studies published between February 2016 and January 2026 were considered. Eligible studies were English-language, full-text original research articles. Narrative reviews, integrative reviews, scoping reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded.

Results: The search retrieved 2,413 articles (1.645 from PubMed and 768 from ScienceDirect). Following PRISMA screening, nine articles were included in the final review. The included studies examined infection prevention, infection incidence, patient-level determinants, patient knowledge, medication adherence, and discharge education to support postoperative cataract care.

Conclusion: Comprehensive postoperative care may improve adherence, self-care, and clinical outcomes after cataract surgery. Further research is needed to strengthen the evidence and identify effective infection prevention strategies.
