Infection Prevention and Control IPCLN IPCN Patient Safety Supervision

Abstract

Background: Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is essential for reducing Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) and improving patient safety. Effective supervision is crucial for ensuring healthcare workers’ compliance with IPC practices. However, evidence on IPC supervision models remains fragmented.

Purpose: To map supervision models used in IPC programs across healthcare facilities.

Method: A scoping review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar for studies published in 2020–2026. Of 194 records identified, 24 articles were included and analyzed using thematic synthesis in accordance with PRISMA-ScR. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools.

Results: Four supervision models were identified: direct (n = 9), technology-based (n = 3), peer-led (n = 5), and interprofessional (n = 7). Direct supervision was the most frequently reported and was associated with improved hand hygiene compliance, PPE use, and IPC practices.

Conclusion: Direct and interprofessional supervision were the most frequently reported models. Supervision that combines direct performance monitoring with interprofessional collaboration may strengthen IPC implementation and support healthcare quality and patient safety.
