Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) OSH Knowledge Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) PPE Usage Behavior

Abstract

Background: Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) knowledge may influence workers’ compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use by increasing awareness of workplace hazards and risks. In Lampung Province, 887 occupational accidents, including 13 fatalities, were recorded in 2025. Preliminary observations at PT X also indicated that approximately five workers did not use PPE optimally and consistently. This highlights the need to strengthen PPE compliance to reduce occupational accident risks.

Purpose: To analyze the relationship between Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) knowledge and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage behavior among field workers at PT X in 2026.

Method: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design involving 50 field workers selected through total sampling. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed using the Chi-Square test.

Results: Most respondents had poor OSH knowledge (32; 64%) and poor PPE usage behavior (27; 54%). A significant relationship was found between OSH knowledge and PPE usage behavior (p = 0.005; OR = 5.720). Workers with good OSH knowledge were 5.720 times more likely to demonstrate good PPE usage behavior than those with poor knowledge.

Conclusion: OSH knowledge was significantly associated with PPE usage behavior among field workers at PT X. Strengthening OSH knowledge through training, education, and supervision may improve PPE compliance and workplace safety.
