Artificial Intelligence Attitude Knowledge Prospective Couples Thalassemia
Abstract
Background: Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that remains a significant health problem in Indonesia. Premarital screening and education are important to increase knowledge and awareness of thalassemia prevention. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based websites may provide an accessible digital approach for screening and health education.
Purpose: To determine the effect of an AI-based website on knowledge and attitudes regarding thalassemia among prospective couples.
Method: This study using mixed-methods design, with a qualitative phase consisting of Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) with experts to refine the instruments and the artificial intelligence (AI)-based website, and a quantitative phase using a quasi-experimental design without an equivalent control group, using pre-test and post-test measurements, which was conducted in August 2026 at the South Tangerang Office of Religious Affairs. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a sample size of 120 participants, divided into an intervention group of 48 participants and a control group of 72 participants. The independent variable in this study was the AI-based website, while the dependent variables were knowledge and attitude levels. Data analysis consisted of univariate analysis in the form of frequency distributions and bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test.
Results: Knowledge scores in the intervention group significantly increased from 7.77±1.59 to 9.33±1.14 (p=0.000), while no significant change was found in the control group (p=0.800). There was a significant difference in knowledge between groups (p=0.000). Attitude scores in the intervention group changed significantly from 64.42±9.49 to 61.04±4.52 (p=0.003), while the control group showed no significant change (p=0.609). A significant difference in attitudes between groups was also observed (p=0.016).
Conclusion: The AI-based website significantly improved thalassemia knowledge and produced a significant change in attitudes among prospective couples. AI-based websites have potential as digital media to support premarital thalassemia education and screening.
