Age Age at First Childbirth Age at Menarche Cervical Cancer
Abstract
Background: Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide. Reproductive risk factors such as age, age at menarche, and age at first childbirth are considered important determinants of its incidence, particularly in developing countries with limited screening coverage.
Purpose: To analyze age and reproductive history (age at menarche and age at first childbirth) as predictors of cervical cancer incidence.
Method: This study employed an observational analytic design with a case-control approach. It was conducted at Aloe Saboe Hospital between August and December 2025. The sample consisted of 18 women with cervical cancer (case group) and 18 women without cervical cancer (control group), selected through a review of medical records. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test, calculating the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) at a significance level of p < 0.05.
Results: Age at menarche was significantly associated with the incidence of cervical cancer (p = 0.001; OR = 2.543; 95% CI: 1.621–3.991). Age (p = 0.396; OR = 1.225; 95% CI: 0.808–1.859) and age at first childbirth (p = 0.760; OR = 0.428; 95% CI: 0.224–0.817) did not show a statistically significant association.
Conclusion: Early age at menarche is a significant predictor of cervical cancer incidence, whereas age and age at first childbirth did not show a significant association in this sample. Early detection efforts should be prioritized for women with a history of early menarche.
Suggestion: Future research should be conducted with a larger sample size and multivariate analysis to control for confounding variables particularly the age at first childbirth, which involved small subgroups in this study in order to obtain more accurate and generalizable risk estimates.
