Self-efficacy and quality of life in hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney disease

Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), as one of the non-communicable diseases with increasing global prevalence and burden, leads to a decline in the quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis; therefore, efforts to improve self-efficacy are needed as an important factor in promoting treatment adherence, disease management, and enhancement of patients’ quality of life.
Purpose: To analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and quality of life in patient chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis.
Method: This study employed a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach involving 99 CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis for ≥3 months (twice a week), using accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL) and Chronic Kidney Disease Self-efficacy (CKD-SE) questionnaires and analyzed using the Somers’D test.
Results: Most respondents had moderate self-efficacy (77.8%) and a moderate level of quality of life (72.7%). The Somers’D test yielded a value of d = 0.205 with a p-value = 0.001
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between self-efficacy and the quality of life of chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Suggestion: Future research is recommended to examine other factors that may influence patients' quality of life and to employ a research design capable of explaining the relationships between variables in greater depth.
