Buerger-Allen Exercises Peripheral Perfusion Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with a steadily rising prevalence, including in Bandar Lampung City. The most common chronic complication observed among inpatients at A. Dadi Tjokrodipo Regional General Hospital is impaired blood circulation to the lower extremities, clinically termed "Ineffective Peripheral Perfusion" in nursing diagnoses. This condition stems from macroangiopathy, which triggers Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).

Purpose: To implement an evidence-based nursing (EBN) intervention utilizing buerger-allen exercises to address the nursing diagnosis of ineffective peripheral perfusion in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Method: This study employed a pre-experimental design, specifically a one-group pretest-posttest model, conducted at A. Dadi Tjokrodipo Regional General Hospital, Bandar Lampung City. Case management was focused on the Internal Medicine inpatient ward. The study involved 10 patients with the relevant medical diagnosis. A non-probability sampling technique, specifically purposive sampling, was used.

Results: Analysis of the Buerger-Allen exercise implementation in this study demonstrated that the intervention was effective in improving peripheral perfusion in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, both statistically and clinically.

Conclusion: The implementation of Buerger-Allen exercises proved effective in improving peripheral perfusion in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients, both statistically and clinically. The success of this intervention was influenced not only by the underlying physiological mechanisms but also by the participants' baseline conditions, specifically the presence of perfusion impairment at a reversible stage, thereby enabling an optimal adaptive response to the intervention.
