Disability Due To Low Back Pain Ergonomics Occupational Health Street Sweepers Working Posture
Abstract
Background: Disability due to low back pain is a significant occupational health problem that can lead to functional limitations and reduced work productivity. The high prevalence of low back pain has become a concern because this condition may progress into functional impairments that restrict daily activities and occupational performance. In Indonesia, the prevalence of low back pain remains relatively high, reaching 18%. Street sweepers are among the occupational groups at risk of experiencing disability due to low back pain because their work involves prolonged bending postures, repetitive movements, long working periods, and increasing age.
Purpose: To analyze the relationship between working posture, working period, and age with the level of disability due to low back pain among street sweepers.
Method: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design. A total of 60 workers were selected using a non-probability sampling technique with a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) observation sheet to assess working posture, the Modified Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire to measure the level of disability due to low back pain, and an individual characteristics questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation test.
Results: Most street sweepers experienced disability due to low back pain in the moderate disability category (66.7%), while 33.3% were categorized as having minimal disability. Spearman’s rank correlation analysis showed significant positive relationships between working posture (rₛ=0.622; p<0.001), working period (rₛ=0.511; p<0.001), and age (rₛ=0.470; p<0.001) with the level of disability due to low back pain. Working posture showed a strong correlation, while working period and age showed moderate correlations.
Conclusion: Working posture, working period, and age were positively associated with the level of disability due to low back pain among street sweepers in Paal Dua, Tikala, and Wanea Districts, Manado City. These findings indicate that ergonomic factors and individual characteristics are associated with the level of disability due to low back pain among street sweepers.
