Psychosocial Stress Self-medication Sleeping Pills Young People
Abstract
Background: Psychosocial stress is a common trigger for sleep disorders in young people and can lead to the use of sleeping pills without medical supervision.
Purpose: To analyses the relationship between levels of psychosocial stress and the self-medication of sleeping pills amongst young people in Indonesia, and identifies the types of medication used, the contributing factors and the associated impacts.
Method: A prospective cross-sectional quantitative design was applied to 99 participants aged 17–24 years who were recruited online via social media (TikTok, Instagram, X) using convenience sampling. Psychosocial stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and self-medication behaviour was assessed using a questionnaire. Data were analysed using the Chi-square test and binary logistic regression (p < 0.05).
Results: The majority of respondents were aged 21–24 (56%), female (57%), students (46%), and experiencing high levels of stress (75.8%). Self-medication was practised by 69.7% of respondents, with the most commonly used medicines being chlorpheniramine maleate/CTM (38.4%) and dimenhydrinate/Antimo (27.3%). There was a significant association between stress levels and self-medication behaviour (Pearson’s Chi-Square = 37.458; p = 0.000), and logistic regression indicated that stress had a strong effect on this behaviour (OR = 21.33; 95% CI 7.95–57.26; p = 0.000). Reported effects included excessive daytime sleepiness (28.3 per cent), dizziness (21.2 per cent) and physical weakness (17.2 per cent).
Conclusion: Psychosocial stress plays a significant role in the self-medication of sleeping pills amongst young people; therefore, education on the rational use of medicines and non-pharmacological stress management is required.
