Adherence Antibiotics Dental Clinic Knowledge Public Health Center

Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a growing global health problem, and one of its main drivers is poor patient adherence to antibiotic therapy. In Indonesia, AMR is estimated to contribute to approximately 36,500 directly attributable deaths and 147,000 AMR-associated deaths. Antibiotic adherence is influenced by several factors, including patients' level of knowledge; however, studies on this relationship among dental outpatients at primary care facilities in East Nusa Tenggara remain limited.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between knowledge level and antibiotic use adherence among dental clinic outpatients.

Method: A descriptive-correlational study with a cross-sectional design involving 51 dental outpatients selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using an antibiotic knowledge questionnaire and the Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS-5). Data were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test, followed by the Contingency Coefficient to assess the strength of the association when significant. If the test assumptions were not met, the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Exact Test was used. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results: Most respondents were female (72.5%), aged 18–45 years (70.6%), had a senior high school education (47.1%), and worked as private employees (27.5%). Amoxicillin was the most frequently prescribed antibiotic (80.4%). Most respondents had a moderate level of antibiotic knowledge (47.1%) and were classified as non-adherent (68.6%). Knowledge level was significantly associated with adherence (p = 0.016).

Conclusion: A significant relationship exists between knowledge level and antibiotic use adherence among dental outpatients at Sikumana Public Health Center, indicating the need for continued educational efforts to support therapy adherence and prevent antimicrobial resistance.
