Exclusive Breastfeeding Maternal Mental Health Mother-Infant Bonding Postpartum Depression
Abstract
Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) and impaired mother-infant bonding are common during the postpartum transition and can negatively affect maternal well-being and child development, with the infant feeding method identified as one associated factor.
Purpose: To synthesize scientific evidence on the association between infant feeding methods (exclusive breastfeeding, formula feeding, and mixed feeding) and postpartum depression and mother-infant bonding.
Method: This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed and ScienceDirect using the PICO framework to identify articles published between 2015 and 2026. Of 315 articles screened, 12 observational studies met the eligibility criteria and were analyzed.
Results: Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a lower risk of postpartum depression in 7 of the 12 studies (58.3%) and with better mother-infant bonding in 5 studies (41.7%). Formula feeding was associated with an increased risk of depression in 4 studies (33.3%), while mixed feeding was associated with impaired bonding in 2 studies (16.7%). However, interaction quality, including eye contact, responsiveness, and emotional engagement, along with maternal psychological state, sleep quality, and social support, was a stronger predictor of bonding than feeding method alone.
Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding tends to support maternal mental health and mother-infant bonding, although psychological, social, sleep, and interaction factors also play important roles. Postpartum services should integrate breastfeeding support, mental health screening, and psychosocial support to optimize maternal and infant well-being.
