Academic Routine Adolescents Mediation School Health Sleep Quality Stress

Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is an important indicator of adolescent health that affects cognitive function, mental health, and academic performance. High academic demands may increase stress levels, which in turn can affect sleep quality. However, studies examining the mediating role of stress in the relationship between academic routine and sleep quality remain limited.

Purpose: To analyze the relationship between academic routine and sleep quality among adolescents and to examine the mediating role of stress while controlling for physical activity, gadget use, and sleep environment as counfounder variables.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 150 twelfth-grade students at the State Islamic Senior High School Model 1 Plus Skills Manado, using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected via a questionnaire that had undergone validation and reliability testing. Data analysis included univariate analysis, the Spearman correlation test, and mediation analysis.

Results: Most respondents were female (65.3%) with a mean age of 16.83 years. The mean scores of academic routine, sleep quality, and stress were 111.17, 45.17, and 11.94, respectively. Academic routine was significantly associated with sleep quality (ρ = 0.413; p < 0.001), academic routine was significantly associated with stress (ρ = 0.581; p < 0.001), and stress was significantly associated with sleep quality (ρ = 0.517; p < 0.001). Physical activity and gadget use were also significantly associated with sleep quality, whereas sleep environment was not. Mediation analysis showed that stress significantly mediated the relationship between academic routine and sleep quality, accounting for 58.9% of the total effect.

Conclusion: Academic routine is significantly associated with sleep quality among adolescents, and this relationship is largely mediated by stress. Therefore, stress management should be considered an important strategy for improving sleep quality and adolescent well-being.
