Childbirth Preparation Childbirth Readiness Family Support Phenomenology Third-Trimester Pregnant Women
Abstract
Background: Childbirth preparedness is an essential factor contributing to a smooth delivery process and the prevention of maternal complication. Childbirth preparedness encompasses physical and psychological readiness, as well as family support, which plays a crucial role in shaping maternal readiness prior to delivery. However, previous studies have not adequately explored the meaning of pregnant women's experiences in receiving family support during childbirth preparation.
Purpose: To explore the meaning of family support in childbirth preparation among third-trimester pregnant women.
Method: A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, this research was conducted in Banjarmasin City. Participants were selected using purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data were collected through in-depth interviews guided by semi-structured interview questions until data saturation was achieved. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. Trustworthiness was ensured through triangulation, member checking, credibility, dependability, and confirmability.
Results: The findings identified four major themes: forms of family support, maternal preparation for childbirth, the influence of family support on childbirth readiness, and mothers’ expectations regarding family support. Family support was perceived as attention, companionship, tangible assistance, information provision, and appreciation, all of which enhanced both physical and psychological readiness. The support received by mother served as a source of self-confidence, security, and preparedness in facing childbirth.
Conclusion: Family support holds profound meaning for mothers in developing childbirth readiness during the third trimester of pregnancy. Emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal support work synergistically to improve both physical and psychological preparedness. Therefore, antenatal care services should adopt a family-centered maternity care approach by actively involving family members in every stage of childbirth preparation to enhance maternal readiness and support safe childbirth outcomes.
