Adolescent Boys HIV Peers Risky Behavior
Abstract
Background: Risky sexual behavior among adolescent males is an increasingly concerning health issue, particularly regarding the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While various individual, social, and structural factors influence adolescent behavior, further understanding is needed to identify the specific factors that drive HIV-related risk behaviors among adolescents.
Purpose: To analyze the influence of peers on HIV-related risk behaviors among adolescent males.
Method: This A quantitative cross-sectional study using secondary data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. Data analysis involved univariate methods, chi-square tests, and logistic regression to identify factors independently associated with sexual status and contraceptive use. Associations are presented as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
Results: Tests showed that all variables examined were statistically significant in relation to sexual status (p < 0.001). Sexual motivation was the most significant factor influencing sexual status (OR = 5.517), followed by contraceptive use (OR = 6.679), sexual history (OR = 3.617 and OR = 2.92), age (OR = 0.334 and OR = 0.498), education (OR = 1.632), and place of residence (OR = 1.352 and OR = 1.983).
Conclusion: Individual, social, demographic, and structural factors influence HIV-risk behavior among adolescent males. Sexual motivation is the factor most closely associated with sexual status and contraceptive use.
Suggestion: Future research should utilize primary or up-to-date data to describe adolescent sexual behavior while taking current trends into account. Furthermore, such studies could analyze variables not examined in the present research—such as access to reproductive health information, communication with parents, the influence of social media, and cultural and religious norms—to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to risky sexual behavior among adolescents.
