Compliance Electronic Health Records Nursing Documentation Nursing Management Technostress
Abstract
Background: The transition from paper-based documentation to Electronic Health Records aims to improve the quality of care. However, nurse non-compliance in completing digital documentation remains high, risking a decline in data quality, hindering continuity of care, and triggering technostress.
Purpose: This literature review aims to examine and synthesize the factors influencing nurses' compliance in conducting digital-based nursing care documentation.
Method: This study employed a literature review design based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Article searches were conducted using the Population, Exposure, and Outcome approach between March and May 2026 across the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and EBSCO databases, with inclusion criteria comprising original full-text articles in English published from 2017 to 2026. Data analysis utilized the narrative synthesis method.
Results: A total of 5,335 literatures were retrieved, and 12 articles were determined to meet the criteria for analysis. Nurses' compliance is influenced by three main factors. Individual factors: system knowledge is the most dominant predictor, followed by digital literacy, length of service, a positive attitude, and technology anxiety. Organizational factors: nurse manager supervision is the primary determinant of compliance, supported by structured training and balanced workload management, which have proven crucial in suppressing data manipulation. Furthermore, technological factors such as complex interfaces, rigid templates, and unstable connections trigger role conflict, burnout, and alarm fatigue.
Conclusion: Compliance with digital documentation is determined by complex socio-technical interactions. Hospital management needs to align the enhancement of nurses' digital competence with strengthened supervision, continuous training, and the optimization of user-friendly EHR systems.
