Personal Hygiene Public Heatlh Scabies

Abstract

Background: Scabies is a contagious skin disease caused by infestation with sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and remains a public health concern. Poor personal hygiene is consistently reported as one of the dominant determinants of scabies transmission, as it facilitates direct and indirect contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects.

Purpose: To analyze the characteristics of respondents and the relationship between personal hygiene and the incidence of scabies.

Method: This analytic observational study used a case-control design. This study was conducted in the working area of the Banjarejo Community Health Center, Madiun City, from June to July 2026. The sample consisted of 102 respondents, including 51 cases and 51 controls, selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews using a personal hygiene questionnaire. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the chi-square test with α=0.05. The association was measured using the odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI).

Results: Most respondents were female (57.8%), aged 12–16 and 36–45 years (19.6%), and had good personal hygiene (52.0%). Among respondents with poor personal hygiene, 44 of 49 (89.8%) were cases, while 46 of 53 (86.8%) respondents with good personal hygiene were controls. There was a significant relationship between personal hygiene and scabies incidence (p=0.000), with OR=57.829 (95% CI: 17.076–195.835).

Conclusion: Personal hygiene was significantly associated with scabies incidence. Respondents with poor personal hygiene had higher odds of experiencing scabies.

Suggestion: The community is encouraged to improve personal hygiene, particularly body, clothing, hand and nail, towel, and bedding hygiene. Health workers are encouraged to strengthen education and health promotion regarding personal hygiene and scabies prevention.
