Adherence Adolescent Girls Anemia Iron Tablets

Abstract

Background: Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia. The government has implemented a school-based Iron Supplementation Program through the distribution of iron tablets as a strategy for anemia prevention; however, adherence to iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls remains varied. This condition creates a critical gap between program availability and utilization.

Purpose: To identify and comprehensively synthesize factors influencing adherence to iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls.

Method: A literature review was conducted using articles retrieved from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases published between 2020 and 2026. The inclusion criteria were developed using the PEO (Population, Exposure, Outcome) framework, consisting of P : adolescent girls, E: factors influencing adherence to iron tablet consumption, O: adherence to iron tablet consumption. Quantitative and qualitative studies available in full text were included. The article selection process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Results: A total of 269 articles were identified in the initial search, and 7 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results of the literature review found that adherence to iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls was generally low. Factors influencing adherence included knowledge and attitudes, family support, peer and school support, perceptions of side effects, and the distribution and accessibility of the iron supplementation program. The main barriers identified were limited knowledge, perceived side effects, negative experiences with iron tablet consumption, and inadequate program monitoring.

Conclusion: Adherence to iron tablet consumption among adolescent girls is a multidimensional construct that requires comprehensive interventions through the simultaneous strengthening of cognitive, psychological, social, and institutional dimensions. Strengthening the school ecosystem, addressing psychological barriers, and building interpersonal trust are key components in designing effective and sustainable school-based anemia prevention programs.
