Family Support Stroke Treatment Motivation
Abstract
Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide, requiring long-term treatment. Patient motivation is an important factor in the success of treatment and recovery processes. Family support may play a significant role in maintaining patients' motivation during treatment.
Purpose: To analyze the relationship between family support and motivation to undergo treatment among stroke patients.
Method: This study employed a cross-sectional design with a total sample of 85 respondents selected through consecutive sampling. The study was conducted at the Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Dr. Pirngadi Regional General Hospital, Medan, from February 9 to March 26, 2026. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis.
Results: This study showed a significant relationship between family support and motivation to undergo treatment (r=0.488; p=0.000). In the multivariate analysis, instrumental support (β=0.325; p=0.007) and appraisal support (β=0.319; p=0.049) showed significant relationships, whereas emotional support (β=0.073; p=0.650) and informational support (β=-0.176; p=0.291) were not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Family support is associated with motivation to undergo treatment among stroke patients, with instrumental support being the most dominant dimension.
Suggestion: Structured family-based nursing interventions are therefore necessary to support treatment motivation among stroke patients.
