Exclusive Breastfeeding Husband's Behavior Husband's Support Oxytocin Massage Education
Abstract
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is a crucial effort in improving maternal and infant health. Success in exclusive breastfeeding is influenced by various factors, one of which is husband support. Low levels of knowledge and involvement among husbands in supporting breastfeeding mothers can hinder the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Education on oxytocin massage is a family-based intervention that can enhance husbands' knowledge, skills, and behaviors in supporting the breastfeeding process.
Purpose: To analyze the effect of oxytocin massage education on husbands' behavior in supporting mothers with exclusive breastfeeding.
Method: This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The study was conducted in the working area of the Simalingkar Community Health Center, Medan, in 2026. The sample consisted of 82 participants selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected via a questionnaire assessing husbands' behavior regarding support for exclusive breastfeeding. The intervention consisted of oxytocin massage education delivered through lectures, demonstrations, leaflets, educational videos, and hands-on practice. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test with a significance level of α = 0.05.
Results: Prior to the intervention, the majority of participants demonstrated poor supportive behavior (84.1%), while 15.9% fell into the fair category. Following the intervention, the majority of participants demonstrated good supportive behavior (93.9%), while 6.1% were in the fair category. Oxytocin massage education improved husbands' behavior in providing emotional, informational, and instrumental support to breastfeeding mothers. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test results showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of oxytocin massage education on husbands' behavior in supporting exclusive breastfeeding.
Conclusion: Oxytocin massage education has a significant effect on improving husbands' behavior in supporting exclusive breastfeeding. This intervention can serve as a family-based health promotion strategy to enhance husband involvement and support the success of exclusive breastfeeding programs in primary healthcare settings.
