Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Foot Bath Sleep Quality
Abstract
Background: Sleep quality disturbances is one of the most common problems experienced by breast cancer patients following chemotherapy. This condition occurs as a result of chemotherapy side effects, including circadian rhythms disruption, fatigue, pain, hot flashes, anxiety, and psychological stress. Poor sleep quality negatively impact quality of life, immune function, and the patient's ability to undergo further treatment. Foot bath therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that has the potential to improve sleep quality.
Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of foot bath therapy on sleep quality in breast cancer patients following chemotherapy.
Method: This quasi-experimental study utilized a pretest-posttest control group design. The study was conducted at Murni Teguh Hospital, Medan, in February–March 2026. The sample consisted of 94 participant, divided into an intervention group and a control group with 47 participant each. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The intervention group received a warm water foot bath (40–45°C) for 10–12 minutes every evening for seven consecutive days, while the control group received standard therapy. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and the Mann-Whitney U Test (p<0.05).
Results: Prior to the intervention, all participant in both groups experienced poor sleep quality. Following the intervention, 93.6% of participant in the intervention group showed improved sleep quality (categorized as good), whereas 66.0% in the control group still had poor sleep quality. The Mann-Whitney test revealed a statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups at post-test (p=0.000).
Conclusion: Foot bath therapy is effective in improving sleep quality among breast cancer patients following chemotherapy and can serve as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention.
Suggestion: Future studies are recommended to utilize a larger sample size, extend the intervention duration, and examine additional variables such as psychological factors, family support, and fatigue levels.
