Chronic Kidney Failure Coping Mechanisms Family Support Hemodialysis Stress
Abstract
Background: The clinical issues and complications associated with chronic kidney failure requiring hemodialysis have negative physical and psychological impacts, which can influence patients' stress levels. Factors that may affect stress levels in these patients include family support and coping mechanisms.
Purpose: To determine the influence of family support and coping mechanisms on stress levels in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Method: A cross-sectional study design was employed. The research was conducted at Sekarwangi Regional General Hospital, Sukabumi Regency, between February and August 2025. The study population and sample consisted of all 82 chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis, selected via total sampling. Valid and reliable instruments were used: the Family Support Scale (FSS), the Brief COPE, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Multivariate analysis was performed using multiple linear regression with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: There was a significant partial influence of family support (p < 0.001; R²: 0.651) and coping mechanisms (p < 0.001; R²: 0.734) on the stress levels of chronic kidney failure patients. A significant simultaneous influence of family support (p: 0.004) and coping mechanisms (p < 0.001) on stress levels was also observed (R²: 0.761).
Conclusion: Family support and coping mechanisms exert both partial and simultaneous influences on the stress levels of chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Suggestion: Future research could utilize longitudinal or prospective cohort designs to identify causal relationships and the dynamics of changes in stress levels.
