Adolescent Girls Body Image Coastal Area Nutritional Status Perception

Abstract

Background: Adolescent girls undergo rapid biological, psychological, and social changes, making them vulnerable to nutritional status issues. One of the dominant psychosocial factors  influencing nutritional status is body image perception.

Purpose: To analyze the relationship between body image perception and nutritional status among adolescents in coastal areas.

Method: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 110 senior high school adolescent girls selected using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by measuring nutritional status based on the BMI-for-age (BMI/A) index and administering a structured questionnaire, the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS). Data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-Square test.

Results: The majority of respondents had a positive body image (70.9%) and good nutritional status (77.3%). However, undernutrition was significantly higher among respondents with a negative body image (53.1%) compared to those with a positive body image (10.3%). Bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between body image perception and nutritional status (p = 0.000).

Conclusion: Body image perception is significantly associated with the nutritional status of adolescent girls in coastal areas.

Suggestion: There is a need to enhance nutrition education and promote positive body image, as well as to strengthen counseling services and psychological interventions in schools to assist adolescent girls  who experience body image issues.
