Addiction Rehabilitation Drug Addicts Quality of Life Relapse Relapse Prevention

Abstract

Background: Drug abuse is a public health problem that impacts individuals' physical, psychological, and social well-being, as well as their quality of life. Individuals with substance use disorders generally have a lower quality of life and are at risk of relapse after rehabilitation. One intervention that can be implemented to prevent relapse is relapse prevention.

Purpose: To analyze the effect of relapse prevention on improving the quality of life of drug addicts.

Method: This quasi-experimental study used a non-equivalent control group approach. The study was conducted from November to December 2025 at the West Java Provincial Mental Hospital. The study sample consisted of 66 participants: 33 in the experimental group and 33 in the control group. Quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, independent t-tests, and the Mann–Whitney test.

Results: The mean age of participants in the experimental group was 31.82 years with a standard deviation of ±7.87 years, all within the 18-59 age range (100.0%). The mean age of participants in the control group was 19.18 years with a standard deviation of ±10.51 years, with the majority of participants within the 10-17 age range (78.8%). Quality of life improved by 36.4% after the relapse prevention intervention, with significant improvements in the physical (p=0.007), psychological (p=0.011), and environmental (p=0.045) domains.

Conclusion: The relapse prevention intervention for drug addicts significantly improved quality of life, particularly in the physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. The most significant confounding factor affecting quality of life was the duration of abuse (more than one year).

Suggestion: It is recommended that relevant hospitals improve the implementation of ongoing relapse prevention programs as part of the rehabilitation of drug abuse patients. This program needs to be developed more comprehensively through a psychosocial approach, addiction counseling, health education, and family involvement to improve patients' quality of life and prevent relapse.
