Breast Milk Breast Milk Nutrients Exclusive Breastfeeding Health Promotion Maternal Knowledge

Abstract

Background: Breast milk (ASI) is the optimal source of nutrition for infants as it contains complete nutrients that support growth, development, and immune system. However, mothers’ knowledge regarding essential nutrients in breast milk remains low, which may affect exclusive breastfeeding practices. Health promotion efforts are needed to improve mothers’ understanding regarding the benefits and composition of breast milk.

Purpose: To determine the effect of health promotion on essential nutrients in breast milk on mothers’ knowledge.

Method: This study employed a quantitative design with a pre-experimental approach using a one group pretest-posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 18 participants selected using a purposive sampling technique.  Data were collected using questionnaires before and after the health promotion intervention, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with a significance level of 0.05.

Results: The findings showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 6.44 (pretest) to 9.06 (posttest). Statistical test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of health promotion on improving mothers’ knowledge.

Conclusion: Health promotion on essential nutrients in breast milk is effective in increasing mothers’ knowledge, serving as a strategy to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding.

Suggestion: It is recommended that healthcare professionals continuously improve sustainable health promotion programs and involve families so that exclusive breastfeeding practices can be optimal and sustainable in the community.
