Dental Caries Maternal Education Maternal Employment Preschool Children Stunting

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a major public health problem characterized by impaired linear growth resulting from chronic undernutrition and various contributing factors, including poor oral health. Dental caries in children may reduce nutritional intake by causing pain and interfering with chewing, thereby potentially contributing to the development of stunting.

Purpose: To analyze the association between dental caries and stunting among preschool-aged children.

Method: This descriptive analytic study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 22,973 children aged 36–60 months were included using a total sampling technique. The study was conducted as a desk study utilizing secondary data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey. Data were analyzed using binary logistic regression and multivariable logistic regression, with a significance level set at p < 0.05.

Results: Statistical analysis revealed that dental caries (OR = 0.88; p = 0.000), higher maternal education (OR = 1.49; p = 0.000), maternal employment (OR = 1.30; p = 0.000), and urban residence (OR = 1.21; p = 0.000) were significantly associated with stunting among children aged 36–60 months.

Conclusion: Dental caries, place of residence, maternal education, and maternal employment were significantly associated with stunting among preschool-aged children.
