Complementary Therapy Female Sexual Function Mind-Body Exercises Women's Sexual Health
Abstract
Background: Female sexual function is a multidimensional aspect of women's health. Mind-body practice is a non-pharmacological approach to supporting sexual well-being, including sexual function.
Purpose: To synthesize evidence regarding the effectiveness of mind-body practice on women's sexual function.
Method: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A literature search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, EBSCO, and Google Scholar using relevant keywords and Boolean operators. Study screening and selection were performed using Rayyan software, based on inclusion criteria developed using the PICOS framework. Included studies included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs in adult women receiving mind-body practice. Risk of bias was assessed using the JBI critical appraisal tool.
Results: Thirteen studies involving women with various clinical conditions were included. Results indicate that mind-body practice can improve women's sexual function, specifically arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction, and can reduce pain symptoms in certain conditions. Pilates tended to show more consistent improvements, while yoga and mindfulness practice showed more variable results.
Conclusion: Mind-body exercises can be considered a complementary therapy for improving female sexual function. However, findings are heterogeneous across exercise types and study characteristics. More robust studies with better methodological quality and reporting are needed to confirm these findings.
