Familiy Support Medication Adherence Patient Knowledge Tuberculosis
Abstract
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infectious disease that remains a major global health problem, particularly due to suboptimal treatment adherence. Non-adherence can lead to treatment failure, relapse, and drug resistance. Factors influencing adherence include patient knowledge and family support, which play important roles in maintaining long-term treatment behavior.
Purpose: To analyze the relationship between patient knowledge and family support with medication adherence among pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
Method: This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 70 pulmonary TB patients were included using total sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires measuring knowledge, family support, and adherence using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression with a significance level of p < 0.05.
Results: Most respondents had moderate knowledge and good family support, while adherence levels were generally low to moderate. Bivariate analysis showed no significant relationship between knowledge and adherence (p = 0.369), whereas family support had a significant relationship with adherence (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed that family support was the most influential factor affecting adherence.
Conclusion: Family support is significantly associated with medication adherence in pulmonary TB patients, whereas knowledge is not. Strengthening family involvement is essential to improve adherence and treatment outcomes.
Suggestion: Further research is expected to develop this study by adding other variables that have the potential to influence medication adherence in pulmonary TB patients, such as patient attitudes, drug side effects, the role of drug supervisors, and access to health services.
