Kangaroo Mother Care Newborns Oxygen Saturation Perinatal Nursing Respiratory Distress
Abstract
Background: Respiratory distress in newborns is a common clinical problem in perinatal units and can lead to decreased oxygen saturation, increasing the risk of neonatal morbidity. Kangaroo mother care is a family-based nursing intervention involving skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant.
Purpose: To analyze the effect of kangaroo mother care implementation on oxygen saturation in infants with respiratory distress.
Method: This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental, single-group, repeated measures pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 38 infants with respiratory distress hospitalized in the perinatal unit, selected using purposive sampling. This study was conducted in the Perinatology Ward of Raja Ahmad Tabib Hospital, Tanjungpinang, from September to November 2025. The kangaroo mother care intervention was carried out for three consecutive days, each lasting 30 minutes. Oxygen saturation was measured daily before and after the intervention using a calibrated pulse oximetry device. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.
Results: The mean oxygen saturation of infants before and after the kangaroo mother care intervention was 90.76, and after the intervention, the mean oxygen saturation was 90.76. Thus, there was no statistically significant difference in oxygen saturation before and after kangaroo mother care implementation on the first day (p>0.05). However, there was a statistically significant increase in oxygen saturation on the second day (p<0.001) and third day (p<0.01) after kangaroo mother care implementation.
Conclusion: There was an increase in the infant's physiological stability, as indicated by a gradual increase in body temperature and oxygen saturation over the three days of intervention. The Wilcoxon test analysis showed a significant increase on the second and third days.
Suggestion: The implementation of kangaroo mother care should be considered as a non-invasive nursing intervention applied continuously to infants with respiratory distress in the perinatology ward. Future research could involve a larger sample size, a wider variety of clinical conditions, and a longer duration of intervention and observation to obtain more comprehensive evidence regarding the effectiveness of kangaroo mother care on neonatal physiological stabilization.
