Diabetes Mellitus Family Support Non-Communicable Diseases Silent Killer Stress
Abstract
Background: Type II diabetes mellitus is a long-term condition that not only affects physical health but can also cause mental health problems such as stress. This condition requires comprehensive management, including support from family members. The role of family support is crucial in helping patients cope with the stress arising from their chronic illness.
Purpose: To examine the relationship between family support and stress in patients with type II diabetes mellitus.
Method: This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 74 respondents, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire to measure family support and stress levels. Data analysis was performed using the Somer's d test with a significance level of p < 0.05.
Results: Most respondents had adequate family support (52.7%) and experienced mild stress (74.3%). The Somer's d test showed a significant relationship between family support and stress (p = 0.000; r = -0.435), with a moderate correlation strength and a negative direction, indicating that better family support resulted in lower stress levels.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between family support and stress in individuals with type II diabetes mellitus. Therefore, strengthening family-based interventions in healthcare is necessary to reduce patient stress.
