ARCS Learning Model Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Knowledge Motivation Self-Efficacy
Abstract
Background: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is an essential skill for nursing students as future healthcare professionals. However, its mastery remains suboptimal due to low motivation, self-efficacy, limited theoretical understanding, and the limitations of conventional teaching methods. Therefore, an innovative approach such as the ARCS Learning Model is needed to improve students’ motivation, self-efficacy, and knowledge in CPR learning.
Purpose: To analyze the effect of the ARCS model on motivation, self-efficacy, and knowledge among nursing students in CPR learning.
Method: A quasi-experimental design with a control group was used. The sample consisted of 108 nursing students selected using total sampling. The intervention group received the ARCS Learning Model, while the control group used conventional methods. Instruments included the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS), the General Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and the CPR knowledge questionnaire based on the AHA 2020 guidelines.
Result: Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results showed that the ARCS model significantly improved motivation in the intervention group (p = 0.034), but not in the control group (p = 0.138). Self-efficacy did not significantly improve in either the intervention group (p = 0.192) or control group (p = 0.919). Knowledge increased significantly in both the intervention group (p = 0.001) and control group (p = 0.008).
Conclusion: CPR instruction for students with poisoning using the ARCS learning model can improve motivation and knowledge, while conventional methods can only improve knowledge, but not motivation and self-efficacy.
Suggestion: CPR is an action that must be mastered by everyone, especially healthcare workers, particularly nurses. Therefore, the ARCS learning model can be used in providing learning because it is considered more capable of improving motivation and knowledge than conventional methods.
