Brokoli Kualitas Tidur Lansia Pegagan
Abstract
Background: Sleep quality tends to decline with age, and sleep disorders are common among the elderly. Poor sleep quality in the elderly can negatively impact physical health, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. Herbal-based interventions are increasingly being developed as safer alternatives to pharmacological therapy. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) contains sulforaphane, a compound with antioxidant activity, while gotu kola (Centella asiatica) is known to have neuroprotective and anxiolytic effects that could potentially help improve sleep quality.
Purpose: To determine the effect of a combination of broccoli and pegagan extracts in improving sleep quality in the elderly.
Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest approach with a control group. Therefore, the study was conducted at Griya Lansia Garut, West Java. However, 36 elderly people were selected using a purposive sampling technique and divided into an intervention group and a control group (18 respondents each). However, the intervention group was given a combination supplement of broccoli and pegagan extract (brogandi) at a dose of 500 mg per capsule, four capsules per day for six weeks. Then, sleep quality was measured using the pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). Furthermore, data analysis was performed using the wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results: The intervention group showed a significant improvement in sleep quality. The mean PSQI score decreased from 9.06±2.07 to 5.44±1.25 (Z = −3.65: p<0.001). In contrast, the control group showed no significant change (p = 0.317).
Conclusion: The combination of broccoli (brassica oleracea) and pegagan (centella asiatica) extracts is effective in improving sleep quality in the elderly and has the potential to be an alternative non-pharmacological intervention to overcome sleep disorders in the elderly population.
Suggestion: Develop a study related to the use of a combination of broccoli (brassica oleracea) and pegagan (centella asiatica) extracts with a larger sample size and a longer intervention period in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of its effectiveness in improving sleep quality in the elderly.
