Basic Health Research Physical Condition of Housing Pulmonary Tuberculosis
Abstract
Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis remains a public health problem in Indonesia, influenced by various environmental factors, particularly the physical condition of homes, which contributes to the transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Purpose: To analyze the relationship between physical home conditions and the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in Indonesia by comparing data from the 2013 and 2018.
Method: This observational analysis study used a quantitative approach, utilizing secondary data from the 2013 and 2018 Basic Health Research. The cross-sectional design included respondents with complete data on home physical conditions and pulmonary tuberculosis status. The chi-square test was used for the bivariate stage and multiple logistic regression for the multivariate stage.
Results: The bivariate analysis showed that components of physical home conditions, such as ventilation, lighting, humidity, window availability, and house suitability, were associated with the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in 2013 and 2018. However, after controlling for other variables, only certain environmental factors remained as independent determinants, while the general physical home condition variable did not always show a significant effect.
Conclusion: The physical condition of homes plays a role in the incidence of pulmonary TB in Indonesia, particularly the availability of windows, lighting, and humidity. Therefore, improving housing conditions, supported by public education and integrating healthy home programs with TB control, is necessary to reduce the risk of pulmonary TB transmission.
