Food Security Health Promotion Mosque-Based Program Nutrition Knowledge Public Health
Abstract
Background: Food security and nutrition knowledge are important components of public health promotion, particularly when health education is delivered through community settings rooted in local culture. Religious institutions such as mosques can provide accessible settings for integrating health education with community engagement. However, evidence regarding participants’ knowledge and acceptance of mosque-based health promotion activities remains limited.
Purpose: This study aimed to describe participants’ knowledge of food security and nutrition and their acceptance of a mosque-based community health promotion program.
Method: A quantitative descriptive study using a cross-sectional evaluation approach was conducted among 23 community participants who attended a mosque-based health promotion activity. Data were collected using a 17-item knowledge questionnaire consisting of 10 food security items and seven nutrition items, along with eight five-point Likert-scale items assessing program acceptance. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize participant characteristics, item-level knowledge, knowledge scores, and acceptance ratings.
Results: The participants had a mean age of 54.48 ± 11.75 years, ranging from 29 to 76 years, and most were involved in household management (69.6%). The mean food security knowledge score was 8.04 ± 1.77 out of 10, while the mean nutrition knowledge score was 5.22 ± 1.48 out of 7. The overall mean knowledge score was 13.26 ± 2.60 out of 17. Knowledge gaps were primarily observed in identifying the components of food security, sustainable agriculture, the recommended proportion of vegetables and fruits according to Isi Piringku (My Plate), and the recommended duration of physical activity. Program acceptance was high, with an overall mean rating of 4.67 ± 0.65 on a five-point scale. The mosque as a setting for health promotion received a mean rating of 4.61 ± 0.72, with 95.7% of participants giving a rating of 4 or 5.
Conclusion: Participants demonstrated relatively high levels of food security and nutrition knowledge and good acceptance of the mosque-based community health promotion program. These findings support the potential acceptability of mosque-based settings for integrating food security and nutrition education into community health promotion. Further studies involving larger samples, validated instruments, and pre–post or controlled designs are needed to assess changes in knowledge and determine program effectiveness.
