Breast Cancer Case Report Chemotherapy Palliative Nursing Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Abstract

Backgroun: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies affecting women. Chemotherapy, as one of the main treatments, may cause side effects such as nausea, fatigue, decreased appetite, and anxiety, requiring appropriate nursing interventions. Progressive muscle relaxation is a non-pharmacological intervention that may help improve patient comfort.

Purpose: To describe the implementation of progressive muscle relaxation in a patient with breast carcinoma after chemotherapy to reduce nausea and improve comfort.

Method: A case report design with a nursing process approach was used in a female patient with post-chemotherapy breast carcinoma at the Darussalam Ward, PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Yogyakarta, on January 20, 2026. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, medical record review, and laboratory examination. Patient symptoms were assessed using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS). Nursing care was based on the Indonesian Nursing Diagnosis, Outcome, and Intervention Standards (SDKI, SLKI, and SIKI). The main intervention was progressive muscle relaxation combined with education and collaborative medical therapy.

Results: Following the intervention, nausea, fatigue, and anxiety decreased, while appetite and patient comfort improved. The patient was able to understand the education provided and experienced no allergic reactions.

Conclusion: Progressive muscle relaxation as part of palliative nursing care may help reduce post-chemotherapy symptoms and improve comfort in patients with breast carcinoma.
